News, an announcement and a first look for email subscribers

I have been awfully quiet of late.  That is because I have been a little sick over the last month or so.  So much so that I was admitted into hospital on my birthday with an annoying case of cellulitis and was there for a week.  I have now just started to get my energy back and wanting to return to writing and get my production schedule back on track.

And David B contacted me the other day (Hi David!) and asked a very pertinent question, which I will answer below…

Announcement Time!

Now I have some news that I need to share with all of you.

Azure Fire Publishing, a 501(c)(3) Literary Nonprofit publisher, devoted to promoting Youth Friendly Fantasy and Science Fiction to all ages

I have been offered a writing contract with Azure Fire Publishing and I have decided to accept it.  All of my Fantasy/Sci-Fi books will slowly start the transition over to be published by them.  My Weird Western (John McCall Mysteries) and Urban Fantasy series (The Order and Ravensdale) will stay with me.

What will this mean for my back catalogue and future Fantasy/Sci-Fi publications? Well, I will get more exposure as a published author with paperback books going into bookshops and also audio books (something I’ve wanted to do for a while but just haven’t had the funds). The publishing company will give my books a nice professional edit. And as well as getting a bit of polishing inside, you will continue to see the same gorgeous covers that were designed for me by Deranged Doctor Designs.

This also means that The Way to Freedom Book 6 – The Searchers, will not be released until Azure Fire have released the previous 5 books Plus Book 1.1.  To make up for this wait, I am going to release the raw chapters every couple of weeks via this email list for you all to read.

What will this mean for readers? My work will be able to reach more individuals in more places while offering a higher quality read and you will get a better end product.

About new books, news, specials and the next Freedom book

Spring is going strong here in Ohio, with at least one large thunderstorm running through each week.  This then has everyone on edge about twisters… But weird weather is a thing here in Ohio – very much like living in Victoria, Australia.  You can go through all four seasons in one day. 🙂

What am I working on now? Well, book 6 and 7 of the Way to Freedom series now have covers and are due to be released soon.  I’ll give you a sneak peak at the cover for The Searchers, which is Book 6.

While that is underway, I’ve started re-writing my urban fantasy novel Winter’s Magic.  This will be re-released at about the same time as The Searchers and will be the first in an urban fantasy series called The Order set in Australia.  I will also be working on a partner series based in the same ‘universe’ but set here in Ohio called Ravensdale.

Oh, and Citizen Erased will be out soon as well, I’ll show off the cover for that next time 🙂

Here is the long awaited cover for The Searchers – Book 6 of The Way to Freedom Series.

Praise for Brother, Frankenstein

“Brother, Frankenstein is Michael Bunker at his best. He just keeps getting better.” ~ Ernie Lindsey, USA Today Bestselling Author of Sara’s Game and Skynoise.

I just finished beta reading Michael Bunker’s new heartbreakingly awesome novel and I have this to say: Hugo Material.” ~ Nick Cole, bestselling author of Old Man and the Wasteland and Soda Pop Soldier.

Brother, Frankenstein finally cements Michael Bunker’s position as one of the most interesting and dynamic sci-fi writers emerging from today’s vibrant indie scene. It’s a tense, exciting, often violent actioner that like its protagonist, benefits greatly from a still-beating heart underneath all the technological bells and whistles.” ~ Eamon Ambrose, Eamo the Geek Reviews

“Brother, Frankenstein is Michael Bunker’s finest work yet. A novel for both the heart and the brain. The best book I’ve read this year.” ~ David Gatewood, Editor of Synchronic and Tales of Tinfoil

“…white-knuckle reading throughout…” ~ Hank Garner, Host of Author Stories Podcast

“…The tension between technology and agrarian simplicity runs like a bright thread through the work— those characters on the technology side are affected by the interaction with their (presumed) opposites, and those on the Amish side are changed and tested as well.” ~ Richard Gleaves, author of the bestselling Jason Crane series.

“…an intriguing and suspenseful novel. I instantly rooted for Frank…” ~ Annelie Wendeberg, bestselling author of the Anna Kronberg thrillers.

Bunker’s finest fictional creation to date…” ~ David Bruns, author of Weapons of Mass Deception

“I loved how this fantastic story of escape and rediscovery made me ponder over the awful consequences when men step into the part of the ‘creator’.” ~ E.E. Giorgi, author of CHIMERAS

When did you start writing?

I’ve been writing stories here and there for most of my life, but it was when I was on maternity leave with my second child that I started writing with the intention of submitting my work to publishers.

What inspires your writing?

Everyday life. I watch the news, read articles, people watch, and stare up at the night sky, always asking “what if?”

What is the best part about being a writer?

I absolutely love hearing from my readers. Finding out that someone has enjoyed something you wrote is simply wonderful. And I look forward to meeting my readers at the Romancing the Capital Convention in Ottawa, Canada in April 2015.

Is there something special or unique about you or your book you’d like to tell us about?

In the Underground series, not only are the rebels fighting against the oppression of the corporation, they are also fighting for their right to love whomever they choose.

All the stories in the Alien Next Door series are about learning that your next door neighbor is really an alien.

Never Gonna Let You Go (The Underground #1)

Science Fiction | Adult

Caught in a tangle of lies, Calla Jacobs must sort through the truth to discover where she truly belongs. A biologist for Planet Core, she finds herself ensnared in a web of deceit. Sent to Airondelle, she must work with a team to prepare the newly discovered planet for colonists from Earth. But the mission does not go as she expected. Her former lover, Erik Edwards, shuns her, sending Calla into the arms of Melina Holloway, their commander, for the attention she craves and more. A confrontation among the trio leaves her with a broken heart, and fleeing from the two people she trusted most.

Attempting to break free from the lies that bind her, she discovers Planet Core has deceived everyone. And when she returns to Earth, Calla learns just how far Planet Core’s control reaches.

Never Gonna Let You Go Excerpt

She needed to focus on the mission. The rapat. She’d been observing the creatures during daylight hours—two more than she’d grown used to on Earth—for a week now, yet she found herself no closer to figuring out a way to capture one without using Earth tranquilizers. With no idea how the drugs would react with one of these creatures, she refused to take the risk. If the rapat were to be tested as a viable food source for the people of Earth who would one day settle

here, she needed to capture one by indigenous means.

The thought of killing and preparing one of the fascinating creatures for consumption repulsed her, but she’d already collected samples of all of the vegetation. The berries, leaves, and bark of the crancait all proved to contain toxins that, when consumed over time, would kill a human. Perhaps the rapat avoided them for the same reason. She’d tested the dry, pink-flowered vegetation the rapat fed on, but found it lacked too many of the vitamins and minerals necessary for human life. Until the next crew arrived to survey another part of the planet, the rapat remained their only option. She had to capture one, test it, skin it, and then prepare its meat for freezing. Planet Core would process the meat for consumption when they returned to Earth, if the rapat proved viable. Thank goodness I don’t have to eat one because I don’t think I could.

Tired of waiting for one to approach her, Calla decided to take action. She needed something to focus on to keep her mind from drifting to inappropriate thoughts about her commander. With only a week left on Airondelle, she needed positive results to be considered for any future missions. She pulled out the dagger she kept sheathed in her boot for defense against any yet undiscovered creatures on the planet. Creeping through the grass, she spotted her target—a young rapat, brown with pink spots, just old enough to begin wandering away from its mother. Ready to attack, she gasped as the herd snuffled out a warning cry and then bolted in front of her. Shit! Every one of them took off, bounding across the fields, and she couldn’t come up with any reason why. She hadn’t moved an inch.

Vegetation rustled behind her. The sound grew closer. She spun around to face a possible attacker, her knife held high.

“Whoa, Jacobs. Put the knife down.” Holloway stood before her, arms raised in submission. Even dressed in her camo uniform, her chestnut-colored hair pulled back in a severe ponytail, she still eclipsed any model from any of the fashion emagazines.

Calla struggled to keep her hands by her sides and cursed under her breath. Anger was better than revealing her other feelings. “You scared my herd away.”

Her commander smirked as if she’d done it on purpose. “It’s a good thing, too. You were about to kill one.”

Alien Admirer (Alien Next Door #2)

Science Fiction | Adult

He fills her with forbidden longing…

Widowed for over a year, Sera longs for the company of her younger, sexier neighbor, the one man she can never have—unless she plans to rob the cradle. It’s too dangerous…

She’s the only one for him…

Adam never wanted to settle down…until Sera. But even when her children give him the green light, he must prove age is an alien concept…

Will Sera give him a chance, or will Adam be left in the cold, never more than her alien admirer?

Alien Admirer Excerpt

Staring out the window at his next door neighbor, Adam cringed. His buddies had already left for Morty’s Pub, needing a break from a week of twelve hour days to finish building another house. He was the only licensed carpenter among them, though they all put in the same effort. Instead of spending his Friday night with them, he’d chosen to lounge in nothing but boxer briefs, and pine over the woman of his desires, but not his reality. Not because one of his parents came from a planet many light years away—a part of his life that he kept secret from everyone.

Neither did their eight-year difference in age weigh into his decision to stay away from her.

No, Sera’s husband had died about a year ago and she’d refused to start dating again, saying her kids didn’t want a replacement for their father.

Adam longed for a way to convince her to take a chance on him. Her children, Melody and Zach, clung to him every time he offered to take them swimming in the lake, or treated them to ice cream from the convenience store up the road, or any other time they spotted him outside.

He adored them.

Sure, Sera needed time to grieve. He understood that, but his mental comprehension didn’t stop his dick from stiffening every time he had her in his sight. No woman had left his body humming with one simple glance in her direction. Except Sera.

He yearned to read her thoughts, sense more than her emotions. Her sadness and grief he empathized with, but nothing explained the confusion he sensed around her. In the few moments alone he’d had with her, she always changed the subject when asked if she’d considered dating again. Sure, she trusted him with her kids, but that trust didn’t extend enough to open up to him. She remained a mystery, one he desperately wanted to solve.

Adam groaned, grabbing a shirt. I’m going out. He’d been through all of this before. No point waiting forever for her to change her mind. So what if his dad said his ability to read her emotions pointed to Sera as his soul mate. She’d probably never view him as anything more than a handy sitter.

Pulling on a pair of jeans, he considered a trip to the local pub. The same women always frequented the place, but at least he’d be guaranteed some action. His fist, and fantasies of the woman next door, no longer brought him much satisfaction. He craved the real thing.

Not going to happen.

After a quick spray of cologne, he peeked out his window one last time. And froze. His neighbor stood naked on the dock, her luscious body glowing in the moonlight. That image ingrained in his mind, his cock stiffened. Screw going to the bar. He either finished the job based on the recent sighting, or acted fast to get even closer to her.

No harm in trying. He rushed down the stairs.
